This standard applies to the events management system used by organisations within the event industry for both one-off and regular events.
The standard can be used by all event organisations (including individuals), regardless of their role or responsibility in an event, or whether or not their core business is event management.
The Standard is relevant for:
- Clients responsible for commissioning an event
- Organisers (organisations or individuals) responsible for the overall management and co-ordination of the event
- Suppliers - within their own individual sphere of control whether the organisation responsible for the overall management and co-ordination of the event complies or not
This standard applies to the full diversity of events, from garden fetes to the Olympics, and is designed to be capable of addressing sustainability management throughout the entire event life cycle (i.e. from conception to final review) or restricted to certain phases.
This standard is “proportional”, in other words, an organisation or individual’s role and position in the supply chain, its size, capacity to adopt the system and ability to implement will determine the requirements of the standard that apply. This means that the application of the standard in any situation is a matter of “informed” judgement.
Due to the above points, the standard is quite complex, particularly when compared to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. It is important for you to understand how the standard applies to you and exactly what constitutes your sustainable event management system. Unlike other management system standards, BS 8901 can apply to both an organisation and to an event. Also, unlike other management system standards, BS 8901 has an obligation to extend the principles of the sustainable event management system throughout the supply chain wherever possible.
Therefore, before commencing down the road of BS 8901, you need to unravel this complexity to clearly understand what the standard means to you and your particular circumstances.
