Claims

The claims you can make with respect to certification are specified in the standard and reflect the number of Phases that have been certified:

Only event clients and/or event organisers can make claims that an event complies with BS 8901. For a one-off event these claims include:

• “[Insert name of event] has been planned in compliance with BS 8901, Phase 1.” (i.e. the event organiser has implemented Phase 1.)
• “[Insert name of event] has been planned and implemented in compliance with BS 8901, Phase 1 and Phase 2.” (i.e. the event organiser has implemented Phase 1 and Phase 2.)
• “[Insert name of event] was managed in compliance with BS 8901.” (i.e. the event organiser has implemented all phases of this standard for this particular event.)

For a recurring event, the event clients and/or event organisers can claim the following if all phases have been implemented at least once:

• “[Insert name of recurring event] is managed in compliance with BS 8901.”

Event clients and/or event organisers that have implemented all phases and intend to apply their sustainable event management system to all their events can claim:

• “[Insert name of supplier/organisation] is BS 8901 compliant.”

This is also the only claim that suppliers to the events industry can make if their involvement in events meets the relevant requirements of this standard. Event clients, event organisers and suppliers can only claim compliance for those activities that are directly related to events. Maintaining this claim will require certification to be retained by the organisation.
